Emily and husband Chris moved their master bedroom downstairs to an existing guest room, where they added a tray ceiling, larger closets, and a luxurious bath. They installed shiplap to the walls to keep the spaces light and rustic. A custom bench and matching beveled mirrors add a note of elegance. The ebony-stained hardwood floors continue throughout the downstairs rooms, with the exception of the ensuite bath, which Emily tiled with hexagonal Carrara marble.

A freestanding island once sat where designer Emily Hewett and her family now enjoy meals. When the previous owners took it with them, Emily decided to hang a chandelier and, in true farmhouse fashion, embrace an eat-in concept. She then lowered the existing serving bar to suit barstools and 3-year-old twins Beckham and Stella, topping the new family friendly island with Calacatta Borghini marble.

A new pool claimed the space formerly occupied by an outdoor patio. Emily answered the loss by converting an unused sunroom into a cabana, which provides shaded seating to entertain, dine, and keep an eye on swimming children. “With the French doors, it’s almost like we have an extension of our living room when we’re entertaining,” she says. Emily chose to surround the pool with synthetic grass to give it a stylish Cape Cod feel without the bothersome upkeep.
