Deck the Halls with Paper Flowers!

Our Christmas tree is finally up and  accessorized! I really surprised myself this year by going in a TOTALLY different direction with my decor. I have never been one to go the traditional red and green route…. In fact, before I got married, I wrapped my tree in feather boas and adorned the branches with these fun little black and white numbers… Bustiers, High heels, Hand Bags, Beads, Crystals, Rhinestones….you name it! If it was black and white and feminine, I was making room for it on the tree!

These whimsical ornaments were perfect when I lived in my black and white “Bachelorette Pad” high in the sky above downtown Dallas! But my taste has changed. And while I still love the idea of a non-traditional tree, I wanted something different.

I’m sure you’ll remember the post I wrote a few weeks ago about my trip to Laurie Anna’s Vintage Home in Canton, TX…. Well the vintage inspiration that I found in her store must still be with me! I started decorating my tree on Sunday with no real vision in mind….all I knew was that I wanted to create a whimsical look with soft colors. What I ended up with is this vintage-esque creation...

The flowers were a DIY project...I made them out of craft paper and tissue paper dusted with gold spray paint. (there are 40 of them!)

I glued small glass ornaments in colors of bronze, gold and silver to the center of the flowers.

Luckily, I was able to use several silver and white ornaments that I already had.

I purchased several of these rusted crosses at Laurie Anna's...

The framed ornament was an engagement picture and a wedding gift from our friend and photographer Karey Roe with Rink Photo.

The mantle....

Flanked with trees made of branches from Laurie Anna's, glittered garland, an apothecary jar filled with ornaments and of course, more paper flowers.

I found the mirror at Home Goods earlier this year. It was a bright, brassy gold which I did not care for, so I spray painted it this taupy-gold color.

I love our fireplace screen! I found it at Garden Ridge for only $79.00!

To create a bit of contrast, I dressed the back of the book shelves in wrapping paper that I found in the wedding section at Target. I secured it with only 4 pieces of double stick tape so that it can be easily removed after the Holidays.

I picked up the pearl embellished mercury glass votive at Michael's for only $2!

Now comes the real work! Shopping for all of the gifts to put under the tree! (wrapped in coordinating papers of course - I've already stocked up!)

Frugal Find of the Week! Trellis Rug

I spotted this fabulous trellis rug about a year ago while surfing the web in an effort to style a living room for one of my clients. Instantly, I fell head over heals in LOVE with it and I just knew had to have it!

source: casasugar.com

Undoubtedly, a rug like this is hard to come by.....especially for a suitable price! I don't like to spend a fortune on rugs....I have 2 sweet puppies that can be destructive, AND I often grow tired of  pieces very easily!  Where could I find something similar without spending thousands of dollars?

Well....never in a million years did I think I would come across something like THIS......

............especially not at Garden Ridge! And for $99.00 for an 8'x10!?! I was amazed!

Now let's be honest, it's not the softest floor covering in the world....but it might just be exactly what you need to make a statement in your home in an area where you're not looking to spend a ton of cash!

I went ahead and purchased an 8'x10'  for our master as I wanted to bring some color and pattern to the floor. I think it does the trick (for now anyways)! Luca seems to be enjoying it as well!

Frugal Find of the Week Follow-up!

A few weeks ago I had lunch with one of my very first clients (and now friend) Seema, and her adorable baby boy! While talking over Tex-Mex, she mentioned that she was in the market for a sunburst mirror for her Dining Room and that she particularly liked the look of the Devon Mirror from ZGallerie. Having recently spent a day perusing through Garden Ridge, I remembered that I had seen a great sunburst mirror which was similar to the Devon....but of course the one at Garden Ridge was very reasonably priced. In fact, I was in the process of doing a post on this particular mirror for my Frugal Find that week!

So right after lunch, she headed to Garden Ridge to hunt it down. I did warn her that the finish on the mirror from Garden Ridge was quite atrocious....however, as I mentioned in the Frugal Find post....a little spray paint could take this mirror from drab to fab!!

As it turns out, Seema was up for the DIY project, so here are the pictures to document her work....

Here is the mirror before being purchased at Garden Ridge...

As you can see, she removed the center and taped off the mirror to protect it from the spray paint...

Frugal Find of the Week! Medallion Throw Pillows

Since I've posted about my friend Jenny's Master Bedroom Makeover, I've received several inquires about where we found the medallion fabric for the throw pillows on her bed. Jenny actually found this fabric at Fabric Factory here in Dallas. She loved it so much we decided to design the entire room around it. So we had a few throw pillows made for the bed, and after all was said and done, the pillows ended up costing around $50 each.

Frugal Find of the Week! Sunburst Mirror

As mentioned in yesterday's post, I love mirrors and I literally can't stop buying them! They are just so versatile! I have used this mirror, from Z Gallerie, in a couple of my recent projects...

I used the gold mirror pictured above in a recent master bedroom makeover (pictures coming soon)......and the white one below in a baby boy's nursery...

Several weeks ago I was on the prowl for some great accessories for a Bachelor Pad Makeover when I came across this sunburst mirror at Garden Ridge for only $39.99!

Now let's be honest....the finish is terribly unattractive.....but the shape is perfect! And you could easily sand down the frame and paint it in any color you desire! At $39.99 it's certainly worth a shot!!

Here are some inspiring ways to use a sunburst mirror in your own home....

This bedroom is TO-DIE-FOR!!! Love the sunburst over the fireplace!!

I am loving this bedroom as well! The color palette is perfection!

Now this is unique! I love that it is slightly more rustic that most other sunbursts you see...

Ummmm.....can you say drama!!! What a great space!

Thanks for stopping by...and happy Friday!

Frugal Find of the Week! Z Gallerie's Angelique Mirror

ZGallerie angelique mirror white Frugal Find

I am loving this Angelique mirror from Z Gallerie! The shape gives sort of an antique feel, but the high gloss white finish lends a modern twist.

The price of the Angelique mirror  is $349.00....a bit pricey for an "accent" mirror if you ask me (or maybe I'm just too frugal!). Anyhow, check out this great alternative that I found for 80% LESS!

Mirror from Garden Ridge / co ZGallerie Frugal Find

WHERE, you ask?  Garden Ridge (Garden Ridge!! Can you believe it?!) for only $59.99!! The shape and style is similar to the Angelique, and with a little high gloss paint you could turn this piece into high glam!

I am dying to use this mirror somewhere, but unfortunately it doesn't quite "go" with the style of our home. So I found a few spaces where it would really fit in!

It would be fantastic in this room!! I would paint it black and hang it in place of the painting on the far wall...it's not that I don't like the painting, I just think the curves of the mirror would add a nice contrast as most everything else in the room is very square.

Black and White room
Black and White room

Same goes for this room! The frugal find would fit right in....maybe over some sort of vanity on the wall opposite the bed to mirror the curves of the headboard.

Nicky Hilton Bedroom

Just because it'a a baby's room, doesn't mean everything in it has to be "baby-ish!" Just look at that wall paper...I love it!! If I were to use the mirror in this room, rather than painting it black or white, I would paint it in a crackled gold and hang it in place of the vertically stacked shadow boxes. Oh, my goodness....that would be amazing...

About a million of my girlfriends are pregnant right now, but as far as I know they are all having boys....I need someone to have a girl so I can design a nursery around this week's frugal find already!! :-)

Project!

Wow! We have a lot of projects going on in our house today...from designing for a clients nursery to creating a picture gallery for our stair way....not to mention our kitchen remodel that I wrote about last week! But what I want to share with you today is this little DIY project that I worked on first thing this morning...

A couple of months ago, my friend Jenny asked me to help her with her and her husband's Master Bedroom. I was thrilled as they have a beautiful home and great taste! The best part was that we basically started with a clean slate as all they had purchased at that point was a bed and end tables.

Over the last several weeks Jenny and I have been hard at work selecting paint, fabric, drapes and accessories to create a stylish master bedroom for her and her husband. In the process, we decided that we would create a sitting area in front of the bay window...the great news was that she already had nice comfy leather chair to fit the space, but we needed to find a coordinating table with storage without spending a fortune! So last week I suggested to Jenny that we hit up one of my favorite discount retailers, Garden Ridge. Needless to say Jenny was a little leery of this suggestion...ok, very leery...but I assured her that at the very least we would find some great accessories.

As it turns out, we found the perfect table for her master bedroom sitting area! The size, shape and price were all right....but the decorative floral pattern that littered the table was all wrong!

Side Table Before 1
Side Table Before 1

Garden Ridge Table - Before

So I talked Jenny into purchasing the table as it was a steal at only $99.00! And I knew that with a little sanding and a $3.00 can of paint we could turn this table into the perfect piece for her master bedroom! So that's exactly what we did! What do you think?! The gold drawer pulls were an after thought, but I think they make a huge impact!

Over the next couple of weeks Jenny and I will apply the finishing touches...at that point I will post before and after pictures of her beautiful new master bedroom! I can't wait to share the end result!
