Making His House Our Home...

In May of 2004, I received a random phone call from an acquaintance of mine inquiring about freelance design services. He explained that he was in the process of building a house in a popular downtown Dallas neighborhood and that he needed someone to guide him through the processes of making his interior selections.

So together we selected cabinets, flooring, wall tile, paint, etc. While keeping his lifestyle and interests in mind, I worked with him over the next 7-8 months to design his Bachelor Pad, where he and his 2 roommates intended to live for the next several years....

To encounter the barbaric destruction we had anticipated with 3 males in living in the house, we selected an indestructible natural colored laminate floor for all of the main living areas,  maple cabinets for the kitchen and baths, orange tile  for the wet areas (yes, I said orange...we were going for a saltillo/Spanish tile look and we were running out of money!) and tiled counter tops for the kitchen (yep - tile...like I said...running out of money).

When the house was complete, he put his final touches on everything.....he added cow skin rugs, antler lamps, Texas stars and (much to my dismay), several animal heads to cover the walls. It was his perfect Bachelor Pad!!

Fast forward to 4 years later and this "acquaintance" of mine was now my soon-to-be husband!! I was so excited! However, I was about to be living in a house that I had designed as a Bachelor Pad, so I knew that I had a lot of hard work ahead of me and I was up for the challenge!

So here we are, happily married for over a year, and I am excited about the fact that this house has once again become my project. It has been quite a struggle blending my love for girly, chic, glam interiors with his love for heavy, rustic, Southwestern decor, but I think we are well on our way to a great compromise!

Regrettably I don't have a single picture of the house in it's state of "bachelorhood," but I'm sure you get the picture from the description above...

Here are a few before pictures of our Living Room taken right after we got married. As you can see, we had recently replaced the natural laminate floors with hand scraped hardwoods and cleared out most of his furniture and accessories, giving me a clean slate to work with...
